The Mitsubishi Outlander is the company's entry in the highly competitive compact sport utility vehicle class.

For the 2008 model year, four trims are available: ES, SE, LS, and XLS. Each is available with a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive system. Standard engine on the ES and SE trim is a 168 hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) transmission. The LS and XLS trim are equipped with a 220 hp 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which is optional on the ES and LS, but the 3.0-liter only produces 213 horsepower on those trims. Safety features on all Outlanders include dual-stage frontal airbags and front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, vehicle stability control, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitor.

For 2008 the Outlander receives a new SE trim and an all new four-cylinder engine with a six-speed CVT transmission. Two new exterior colors have also been added.
