Expert's Rating

4.5Excellent

MPG 20 City / 27 Highway
BMW's X3 is a 4-door crossover SUV - it seats five with plenty of rear cargo space, although it's slightly smaller than the X5. It's all-wheel drive, with BMW's 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, which BMW claims is just as efficient as a manual transmission .The X3 also gains fuel efficiency from twin-screw turbochargers, a variable valve timing system, automatic engine start-stop at idle, and regenerative braking to help charge the battery.

Introduction

The X3 is lauded for its excellent handling, combining a nimble feel with stable footing in a variety of road conditions. The xDrive system uses dynamic stability control to monitor slippage and change the amount of power sent to each axle. The 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes are also dynamically controlled.
