There are hybrids, and then there are Porsche hybrids. The Cayenne S Hybrid is powered by a supercharged 3-liter V6 engine with an attached electric motor. This combination produces a massive 380 horsepower and 427 pound-feet of torque, and manages to pull 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.
These aren't great numbers for a hybrid -- the diesel-powered Cayenne actually produces better mileage -- but impressive nonetheless when you consider the amount of power this engine generates. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission are standard.
The Cayenne's interior is designed like a sports car. The cabin features a center console loaded with a massive array of buttons that can be confusing at first. The touchscreen display is impressive, though. Wood and leather are of high quality throughout, and craftsmanship is second to none. Reclining rear seats are a wonderful addition. The Cayenne's cargo capacity is a bit small for a crossover SUV: 59.7 cubic feet.
Drivers won't be disappointed when sitting behind the wheel of a Cayenne Hybrid. The supercharged V6 engine is impressive. Acceleration is quick and responsive -- better, in fact, than its diesel and base V6 siblings.
Like all Porsches, the Hybrid shines on the road, whether on the open road or speeding into a turn, when body roll is remarkably limited. All-wheel drive sends power to the correct wheels at the correct time.
The Hybrid isn't cheap, and its sticker price quickly escalates with optional features. If you can afford it, however, the Cayenne Hybrid offers a thrilling driving experience, the ability to seat five, and a sense of class and luxury not found in more affordable crossovers.
