BMW has confirmed to Autoevolution that its "Sports Activity Vehicle" luxury crossover/SUV lineup will grow in 2014 to include one more model, the2014 BMW X4.Sharing a platform with the 2013 X3 but designed to "target a completely different niche" than that compact luxury sport-cross, the X4 will be sportier, more stylish, and slightly pricier.
We would not be at all surprised if BMW chooses a design-first, two-door body style for the X4 as shown in the artist rendering here, along the lines of the Range Rover Evoque Coupe. While the current 2013 X6 is more of a traditional four-door SUV, only with the rear section given the chopped-roof fastback treatment, such tall luxury coupe/crossover two-doors are becoming more common, with models from MINI and others set to reach the market soon.
The X4 will most likely come standard with xDrive AWD and your choice of BMW's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder and 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engines. A high-performance X4 M variant is not inconceivable, and would trail the standard variants to market by a year or two.
The X4 will be officially revealed some time during the 2013-2014 auto show season - style-conscious Los Angeles in November makes a likely candidate - and will reach dealerships in the first half of 2014. Pricing should split the difference between the X3 and X5 at $45,000 or so to start.
