Preview: 2014 Ford Fiesta EcoBoost 1.0

, Automotive Editor - April 23, 2013

Getting all set to release for the 2014 model year with a comprehensive mid-cycle refresh, the Ford Fiesta subcompact will now come with a new engine choice: Ford's tiny 1.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged and direct-injected three-cylinder engine. The smallest engine ever offered from Ford, the 1.0 is compact enough to fit into a standard airplane carry-on bag and provides outstanding efficiency while still producing 123 horsepower and a solid 148 lb-ft of torque. You might think that a 3-cylinder engine won’t have enough oomph to get the car going, but the Fiesta weighs in at a svelte 2,971 pounds, a full 450 pounds less than a standard gasoline-powered Fiesta.

Expected to achieve well in excess of 40 highway mpg, the new Fiesta 1.0 is projected to be the new most-efficient gas-powered car in the country, toppling the likes of the Scion iQ and Kia Rio.

Better still, it comes in an inexpensive, versatile package that shines in a field of ho-hum subcompact cars, bringing real daily money savings for over $10,000 less than entry-level electric cars.
