Despite dropping off the radar in most segments, big coupes remain very much in fashion at the top end of the market. The Mercedes-Benz CL550 proudly carries on with abundant power and prestige wrapped in a stately two-door body.
What's New for 2014
All models now come standard with a rearview camera, infrared night vision and massaging front seats.
Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz CL550
Befitting a car of its stature, the CL550 doesn’t mess around when it comes to standard mechanicals. All models receive a 429-horsepower twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8, all-wheel drive, an adaptive air suspension and 18-inch wheels.
You also get distinctive features like LED running lights and taillights, heated power-folding mirrors, a power trunk lid, a rear power sunshade and a 15-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system. The four-person interior overflows with fine finishes, ambient lighting and conveniences you never knew you needed.
Mercedes-Benz offers a handful of option packages for buyers who want to coax a trifle more capability out of their CL550:
- Driver Assistance: Adds a suite of safety technology: adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation with automatic braking, a blind-spot warning system and active lane-keeping assist.
- Sport: Comes with 19-inch wheels and sportier exterior styling details.
- Sport Plus One: Includes the Sport’s modified styling, plus 20-inch wheels and high-performance tires.
Standalone options include a heated steering wheel, a split-view infotainment display and your choice of wheel designs.

Although it’s a tick slower than other CL-Class models, the CL550 is the only one of the bunch with all-wheel drive—and, incidentally, the least expensive. If you’re shopping for a daily driver in this league, the CL550 is one of the most appealing choices overall. But don’t think about it too long—a replacement model is in the wings, so availability is already limited.
