Full-size crossovers and performance don’t usually travel hand in hand, but Mercedes-Benz makes a go of it with GL63 AMG. It’s a seven-passenger luxury ship that compensates for its bulk with a twin-turbo V8 and aggressive hardware underneath.
What's New for 2014
Like the rest of the GL-Class, the 63 AMG can now be had with a split-view dash display. The other new GL feature—heated and cooled cupholders—is standard here.
Choosing Your Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG
The GL63 AMG gets its distinction from a 550-horsepower 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. You also get an exclusive sport-tuned air suspension with adaptive stabilizer bars, 21-inch AMG wheels and sportier trim throughout. The 63 AMG shares its all-wheel drive system and seven-speed automatic transmission with lesser GL models. We can’t think of another vehicle that can swallow 94 cubic feet of cargo and also go from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (although probably not at the same time).
Nearly every GL-Class option is standard on the 63 AMG. That means you get high-tech stuff like active collision mitigation, a surround-view camera and an automated parallel parking system. Interiors receive your choice of wood trim and a special “designo” leather seating package with a heated second row. A panoramic sunroof is also included.
Given this indulgent level of equipment, options are few. The only major items to consider are a rear-seat entertainment system and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system that’s exclusive to the 63 AMG.
