It might be the junior roadster in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, but the SLK doesn't feel that way -- especially in mid-level SLK350 trim.
After a major redesign a few years ago, don't expect significant changes for 2014.
Creature comforts abound in the SLK350. The retractable panoramic sunroof folds into the trunk in twenty seconds, and the eleven-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system provides premium entertainment. The wireless Media Interface connects to an iPod, smartphone or compatible MP3 audio player. For top-down driving in brisk weather, the optional Airscarf vents warm air onto the necks of the driver and passenger.
This middle child of the SLK-Class zips along on the wings of its direct-injected 302 horsepower double-overhead cam V-6 coupled to a smooth shifting seven-speed automatic which can be manually controlled using paddle shifters on the steering wheel. This German-engineered road rocket zooms from zero to sixty in a quick 5.4 seconds. Test drivers report, however, that steering is less than tight, and the suspension a little soft for a roadster. Fuel economy is average for this segment -- the SLK350 registers 29 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined.
