With some newer competition for the title, it may no longer be the least expensive car in America, but the Versa is still known for its low price of entry.

That economical mission continues with outstanding mileage—especially with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that earns 31 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. (These numbers drop to 27/36 with the five-speed manual and 26/35 with the four-speed automatic.)

What's New for 2014

Nissan has significantly beefed up option packages and trim levels this year.

Choosing Your Nissan Versa

The lean, mean Versa is powered by a 1.6-liter engine producing 109 horsepower—transmission choices are directly related to trim level.

The base S is the only Versa that offers the five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions. Standard features include 15-inch aluminum wheels, a rear trunk spoiler and an auto-dimming mirror.

S Plus

S Plus adds the super-efficient CVT, air deflectors for the front tires and center fascia, rear spoiler, cruise control and two rear speakers.

The SV level adds upgraded details like chrome grille accents, remote-controlled sideview mirrors, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, upgraded cloth upholstery, power windows and chrome for interior door handles. The optional SV Convenience Package adds Bluetooth, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, an upgraded stereo, map lights, a front passenger vanity mirror, 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and fabric headliner.

The top-of-the-line SL features 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, fog lights, variable intermittent wipers, Bluetooth, steering wheel audio controls, USB/iPod connectivity, an upgraded audio system, and door-linked map lights. The optional SL Tech Package includes a rearview camera, navigation with a 5.8-inch color touch-screen display, voice recognition for audio and navigation, streaming audio via Bluetooth and hands-free text messaging.

CarsDirect Tip

The Nissan Versa is all about economy—and that's why we'd suggest sticking to the lower trim levels. The more amenities you add, the higher the price tag gets, and the more likely you are to find more accomplished competition.
