The debut of the Porsche Cayenne in 2002 transformed the German automaker from a manufacturer of sports cars into a well-rounded luxury car company. Ever since, the Cayenne has set the benchmark for luxury SUVs that offer sizzling performance.

Choosing Your Porsche Cayenne

The Cayenne is made in a wide variety of engine options spanning from 300 horsepower to 550 horsepower, and what's under the hood is the defining characteristic of each trim level.

Cayenne

The base Cayenne is equipped with a 300-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 supported by active all-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox. The eight-speed automatic transmission is a no-cost option, and what most American buyers will choose. It's not a fast car, but 60 mph arrives in a reasonable 7.4 seconds.

Opt for the Platinum Edition.

Cayenne Diesel

With a diesel-powered 3-liter V6, output drops to 240 horsepower, but highway fuel economy leaps to an exceptional 29 mpg. You'll still reach 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.

Opt for the Platinum Edition.

Cayenne S

The main feature in the S is the additional grunt from a 400-horsepower 4.8-liter V8. Expect 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds.

Cayenne GTS

The most powerful of the naturally aspirated Cayennes, the GTS squeezes an additional 20 horsepower from the same V8 used in the Cayenne S. The big SUV will reach 60 mph in a scant 5.4 seconds.

Cayenne Turbo

A twin-turbocharged version of the Turbo's V8 churns out 500 horsepower. The zero-to-60 mph dash drops to 4.4 seconds.

Cayenne Turbo S

An additional 50 horsepower in the Turbo S gives the ultimate Cayenne a 60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and a top track speed of 175 mph—this from a midsize SUV with plenty of space for four and their luggage.

As with any Porsche, a nearly endless list of options can personalize your Cayenne to a degree few competitors can match. Beware, though: Even with a $100,000+ base price, the Cayenne can still get much more expensive. So choose your extras carefully.

CarsDirect Tip

If you're a middle class buyer, we recommend the Diesel as a great blend of economy and performance. For buyers who can afford it, though, there's nothing quite as thrilling as a turbocharged Cayenne. Our pick is the Turbo—the Turbo S doesn't quite seem to justify the extra $36,000.
