What you must know before buying the Toyota Prius Plug-in
, Automotive Editor -
  • APR plus cash back deal is tough to beat
  • Federal and state incentives are still being offered
  • Pricing gap with standard Prius has grown smaller
  • Lease bonus cash means a great rate

Excellent time to buy a Prius Plug-In:

Toyota is pulling out all the stops in an effort to find good homes for the relatively slow-selling Prius Plug-In hybrid. For the month of September, there are still excellent deals to be had: 0% APR financing for up to 60 months plus $2,000 finance cash back, or alternatively, $3,000 in customer cash.

Unless you don’t need financing at all, the APR plus cash is clearly the better deal. Note that these deals will vary regionally. Military members can take an extra $500 in customer cash back. Pricing before any special incentives remains at full MSRP.

Compare with standard Prius: Is the Plug-In worth it?

Before special incentives, it was hard to justify the upgrade to the pricier Prius Plug-In, as its all-electric range is a bit underwhelming at just 11 miles or so. But with today’s deals, the pricing gap between a base Prius Two and the Prius Plug-In has shrunk to just $2,500 or so. Choose an optioned-up standard Prius and you might actually end up paying more. If you make a lot of short trips, savings from the all-electric mode will really stack up over time.

Door-busting lease specials in some regions:

A new-generation Prius is not far off, so leasing a Plug-In today then keeping it for just 2 or 3 years may be an especially attractive option, made better still through currently available $2,000 lease bonus cash. Lease offers vary from one region to the next, but in the Northeast, you can find one at a door-busting payment of just $189 per month for 24 months with $1,399 due at signing. Southern California lessees see an offer of $349 per month for 36 months with just $999 due at signing.

*Incentives may vary by region.
