The Volkswagen Beetle is a rare combination of great retro looks, fun-spirited driving and a dash of practicality as well. The Beetle offers a performance Turbo model, a fuel sipping clean diesel engine and a convertible variant. The compact rides on a very capable platform borrowed from the Golf, delivering competent handling as well as impressive safety features and a stylish, well-executed interior.

What's New for 2014

There are a number of significant changes. A new 1.8-liter turbo is set to replace the 2.5-liter engine midway through the 2014 product year. Also new is an independent rear suspension and a limited-edition GSR trim. The high performance turbo models are now called R-Line.

Choosing Your Volkswagen Beetle

Which trim level you choose is closely related to the engine you choose, and all but the GSR are available as a convertible:

2.5L

The Beetle starts 2014 with a base 2.5-liter five-cylinder available with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. It puts out 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy numbers are 22mpg city and 31mpg highway with manual transmission, or 22mpg city and 29mpg highway with automatic.

1.8T

This engine is due to be phased out midway through 2014 and replaced with an all-new 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that matches the five-cylinder's 170 horsepower and ups the torque to 184 pound-feet.

2.0L TDI

The 2-liter turbodiesel delivers 140 horsepower and an impressive 236 pound-feet of torque, and is matched with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The TDI boasts remarkably thrifty fuel economy of 28 mpg city and 41 mpg highway with manual transmission, and 29 mpg city and 39 mpg highway with automatic transmission.

2.0T R-Line and 2.0T GSR

The high-performance models use a gas-powered 2-liter four-cylinder turbo that makes 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. It can be fitted with a six-speed manual delivering 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway or the excellent six-speed DSG automatic delivering 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

CarsDirect Tip

We're fans of Volkswagen's diesel technology, and that makes a TDI coupe or convertible our top choice. But this line-up appeals to a broad range of tastes—so go with the one that charms you the most.
