The Toyota Prius is still a byword for fuel-efficient gas-electric hybrid technology. It's by far and away the most popular hybrid, with plenty of loyal owners. Despite the current generation beginning to get on in years, it remains a strong choice for buyers interested in saving fuel while still having a fairly spacious and practical car.
What's New for 2015
For 2015, the Prius gets a new Persona Series version based on the Prius Three trim level. Available in red or white, the Persona Series gets 17-inch alloy wheels with a dark metal finish, black leatherette seats, ambient interior lighting and metal-look accents everywhere inside.
Choosing Your Toyota Prius
The Prius essentially comes four model grades, differing mostly in interior equipment and some comfort features like a sunroof and navigation. All are powered by the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor for a net 134 horsepower and with front-wheel drive and a CVT only, making a combined EPA estimate of 50 mpg.
The Prius is no luxury car, so it's unfortunate you have to opt for the top-spec car to get safety features like lane keep assist and a head-up display. That said, the Three is a strong value at around $26,000 for a car close to midsize sedan territory that also gets fantastic fuel economy.
