Volvo’s sporty luxury wagon is designed to appeal to shoppers who can’t quite decide between a comfortable sedan and a rugged crossover. In addition to ample utility, an XC70 has enough ground clearance to tackle a few rural pathways. Though not intended for serious off-road use, the muscular-looking XC70 attracts buyers who seek all-weather performance without leaving the passenger-car realm.
What's New for 2016
At mid-year (2015.5), Volvo introduced a new Drive-E 2-liter four-cylinder engine, with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Start/Stop technology also was added to four-cylinder models. New standard features included Sensus Connect and Navigation. Platinum trim levels were added, as well as a new Convenience Package. Nothing has changed for 2016, except that a compass no longer is incorporated into the inside mirror.
Choosing Your Volvo XC70
Volvo’s Drive-E engine powers all T5 front-drive versions of the XC70. Mating with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generates 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is estimated at 24 mpg in urban driving and 31 mpg on the highway.
With all-wheel drive XC70s, you get a choice of 3.2-liter six-cylinder (also 240 horsepower) or, in the T6, a 3-liter turbocharged six-cylinder that generates 300 horsepower. Both six-cylinders use a six-speed automatic.
Add a choice of trim levels, and Volvo offers an awful lot of possibilities with the XC70.
- Technology Package includes adaptive cruise control, collision warning with full braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection with full auto braking, distance alert, driver alert control, lane-departure warning, road sign information, and active high beams.
- Proximity Package includes Keyless Drive (standard on T6), rear park assist camera, and power tailgate.
- Convenience Package includes a quick-fold power passenger seat, HomeLink, cargo cover, grocery bag holder, 12-volt outlet in cargo area, and power-folding rear head restraints.
- Climate Package includes heated front/rear seats, a heated windshield and washer nozzles, heated steering wheel, and interior air quality system.
Volvo’s Drive-E engine delivers a great blend of performance and efficiency, making the T5 Drive-E the prudent choice for most buyers. Naturally, anyone in the snow belt, or who intends to leave the highway occasionally, would be wise to limit shopping to the AWD six-cylinders models. Tech enthusiasts and the safety-minded, who also welcome a few luxuries, might be tempted by the Platinum edition, despite its heftier price.
