In two short years, the Gran Coupe has become the most popular of the 6 Series models. It has achieved this status by offering drivers the opportunity to enjoy the same muscular styling and excellent power that the standard coupe and convertible have without sacrificing the practicality of four doors. The result is a sleek sedan that offers riders the comfort necessary for longer distance touring combined with the sportiness and luxury you’ve come to expect from a BMW.
What's New for 2016
This year saw the 650i Gran Coupe getting a refreshed nose and tail, along with a new active exhaust system that really gets the engine purring when driving in Sport mode. Some additional interior updates include a new steering wheel and a revised center console with the newest touchpad iDrive controller.
Choosing Your 650i Gran Coupe
The 650i Gran Coupe features standard equipment befitting its position as a top-end luxury car. It has a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with an eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers 445 horsepower and an EPA fuel estimate of 22 mpg city/33 mpg highway.
Inside is a 16-speaker/600-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system, 20-way power front seats, hard drive-based navigation with real-time traffic data, premium leather interior, enhanced USB and Bluetooth connectivity, adaptive cruise control, split fold-down rear seat, power-folding heated mirrors and 19-inch wheels.
A variety of option packages enhance the Gran Coupe's comfort and performance:
- Moving to the Executive Package adds soft-close automatic doors, a head-up display, four-zone climate control, ventilated front seats and power rear sunshade and rear side window shades.
- The Cold Weather Package is a minor bump in price of $450 to add heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.
- Adding the Driving Assistance Package nets you a bundle of advanced safety technologies including active cruise control, active driving assistant, active blind spot detection, and side and top view cameras.
- The M Sport Package includes nearly all of the features from the other packages except for the heated rear seats.
Additional options include a 1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system, all-wheel drive, night vision with pedestrian detection, parking assistant, integral active steering and active front seats.
If you're looking to upgrade beyond the Executive Package -- and there are plenty of reasons to do so -- we continue to be fans of the M Sport Package. It remains a good deal in the number of features that it adds for its relative cost.
