2017 BMW X2: Preview, Release Date

  September 29, 2016

Model Preview

The BMW X2 will be an all-new crossover model for the 2017 or 2018 model year. Unveiled in concept form at the 2016 Paris Motor Show as the "Concept X2," the vehicle represents a notable departure in design for the German brand.

Contrary to some expectations that the vehicle would simply be an X1-turned-coupe, BMW's concept shows a bolder design direction compared to its current models. The vehicle's low stance and unusually forward-slanting rear pillar signal a decidedly sporty character. BMW hopes that the vehicle will make waves in an increasingly crowded segment filled with the likes of the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, Lexus NX 200t, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and more.

Official specs haven't been released yet. Since the vehicle will be based on the same platform as the X1, it's likely that the X2 will be offered as a front-wheel drive vehicle with a turbocharged engine. For reference, the current X1 is offered with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo rated at 228 hp with 258 lb-ft of torque. The engine is fitted with either an 8-speed STEPTRONIC transmission or an available 8-speed sequential automatic with the optional M Sport Package.

Although BMW offers diesel versions of the X3 and X5, there has been no word yet on whether or not a diesel will be on the table for the X2. Similarly, BMW's i Performance lineup of plug-in electric vehicles has grown to include the 330e, X5 eDrive, i3 and i8. However, there are no indications that the X2 will get a similar option.

Expect further updates as they become available.
