What's New
Other than the deletion of three paint colors and the introduction of three new ones, Chevrolet’s sub-compact Spark hatchback remains unchanged for the 2022 model year. Prices have crept up by two hundred dollars compared to the 2021MY, though this remains one of the most affordable cars on today’s market.
Choosing Your Chevrolet Spark
Every Spark can be purchased as either a manual or with automatic transmission, for a $1,100 premium, with prices starting at $14,595 including destination for base LS manuals. There are modest price hikes for 1LT and ACTIV trims, with the 2LT automatic capping the range at $19,095.
Engine Choices
The only engine available in the Spark is a 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine, generating 98 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. This is supplied to the front wheels through an automatic CVT or five-speed manual transmission, returning an EPA-estimated 29 miles per gallon city, 37 mpg highway, and 33 combined, rising to 30/38/33 MPG in automatic guise. The ACTIV model’s figures are fractionally different at 29/37/32 MPG for manual models and 30/37/33 for automatics.
Engine Type | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (City/Highway/Combined) |
1.4-liter | 98 hp | 94 lb-ft | 29/37/33 MPG (manual) 30/38/33 MPG (auto) 29/37/32 MPG (ACTIV manual) 30/37/33 MPG (ACTIV auto) |
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
Cargo capacity for the four-seater Spark stands at 11.1 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, and 27.2 cu ft once they’re dropped.
Safety Features
There’s a curious imbalance in the Spark’s safety roster, with every model receiving ten airbags, traction control and hill start assist. Yet buyers of base LS models don’t get automatic door unlocking after an emergency, or daytime running lights. Lane departure warnings and automatic emergency braking are optional extras on flagship 2LT models only, which is also the only trim to receive rear parking assistance as standard.
Connectivity
Buyers of subcompact hatchbacks don’t necessarily expect high-end infotainment, but even so, the four-speaker stereo in LT models feels rather outdated. At least there’s a seven-inch color infotainment system with connectivity options including 4G WiFi and Bluetooth. Two more speakers are fitted to 1LT models, with steering wheel-mounted controls and satellite radio. However, you’ll look in vain for features like navigation, smartphone mirroring, or wireless charging, even on the options list.
2022 Chevrolet Spark LS – MSRP from $14,595
As you might expect on a car costing less than $15,000, LS trim is sparsely equipped both inside and out. The only specifications worth noting are climate control, a seven-inch infotainment display, and high-back bucket seats. You can’t even improve on the standard specifications, since there are no options packs available on any Spark model.
2022 Chevrolet Spark 1LT – MSRP from $16,495
Replacing LS’s steel wheels with aluminum ones, 1LT models further benefit from remote keyless entry and heated power outside mirrors, plus LED daytime running lamps. In the cabin, you’ll find a slightly better stereo system with satellite radio, cruise control, and power windows.
2022 Chevrolet Spark ACTIV – MSRP from $17,595
There are a few splashes of relative luxury on ACTIV models, including fog lamps and halogen headlights. The steering wheel is leather, and the leatherette seating trim incorporates heating elements in the front.
2022 Chevrolet Spark 2LT – MSRP from $17,995
For a few hundred dollars more than ACTIV, 2LT models receive keyless entry and a superior driver information system, plus rear park assistance.
Compare Spark Trims Side-By-Side
Some buyers will be shocked at how basic LS models are, but since higher trims do little to justify their price premium, 1LT is probably the best compromise. It offers a few extra creature comforts, yet it’s $1,500 cheaper than 2LT without missing out on any significant features.
