Automotive Editor -

The value leader of the Mitsubishi line, the Mirage thrives on its low price and economical operation. You also get a surprising amount of cargo space and plenty of standard features for this class.

What's New for 2017

After sitting out the 2016 model year, the Mirage returns with upgraded interior trim and a new grille, hood, and bumper treatment. The braking and suspension systems have been revised for more confident performance.

Choosing Your Mitsubishi Mirage

Like most subcompacts, the Mirage is four-door hatchback with room for four passengers, or five in a pinch. A sedan model, dubbed G4, is expected later in the year. With the rear seat folded, the Mirage offers 48 cubic feet of cargo space, which is certainly above average for this class.

The 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine makes 78 horsepower, a few more than before. A five speed-manual transmission comes standard, and you can opt for a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Efficiency is outstanding with the CVT: 37 mpg around town, 43 mpg on the highway, and 39 mpg in combined driving. You won't do any better than that without springing for a hybrid. Mileage ratings are about 3 mpg lower with the manual.

The Mirage is now available in three trim levels:

ES

Comes decently equipped with automatic climate control, a four-speaker sound system, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. The ES rolls on 14-inch steel wheels.

SE

Adds a bunch of popular features, including an audio display with smartphone integration, Bluetooth phone, a rearview camera, cruise control, foglamps, alloy wheels, and keyless ignition.

GT

Gets the CVT as standard, plus heated front seats, bi-xenon headlamps, and unique 15-inch wheels.

There are no factory option packages for the MIrage, but you can select from a number of dealer-installed accessories, including a premium Rockford-Fosgate sound system and front and rear parking sensors.

CarsDirect Tip

You get the most car for your money by going straight to the GT, where the CVT (which we recommend) is standard, along with everything else most buyers want in a commuter.
