Contributing Editor -

The subcompact Yaris hatchback is the smallest Toyota model. It comes in three- and five-door configurations along with three trim levels. Introduced in 2007 and followed by the second-generation model in 2012, the French-built Yaris offers excellent value with fully equipped models retailing for under $19,000. Consider the Yaris as the latest in a long line of tiny Toyotas with the Echo and Tercel preceding it.

What's New for 2017

The big news for 2017 is the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C), three driver assist technologies not usually found in a small car. These include a pre-collision system, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams. The pre-collision system works at speeds between 7 and 85 mph, utilizing a camera and a laser beam to detect a vehicle ahead. Audio and visual alerts are made if the system detects a possible collision. Further, if the driver doesn’t take action fast enough the system may initiate braking, although it won’t completely stop the car.

Also new for this year is the availability of Ruby Flare Pearl paint, a premium patina infused with large metallic flakes to enhance vibrancy. This color represents a $500 upgrade.

Choosing Your Toyota Yaris

Every 2017 Yaris is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 106 horsepower and 103 pound-feet of torque. An easy shifting five-speed manual gearbox is standard on the L only; a four-speed automatic transmission is standard on the LE and is available on the SE.

The 2017 Yaris with the manual gearbox makes an EPA-estimated 30 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Models equipped with the automatic transmission are rated at 30 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

All models come with nine airbags, daytime running lights, a rear window wiper and defogger, and room for five. You also get an Entune audio system with a 6.1-inch screen, six speakers, an auxiliary jack, USB port, and Bluetooth wireless technology. Navigation is a port- or dealer-installed option.

L

Starting at $15,250 (plus an $865 delivery fee), the base three-door Yaris L offers illuminated entry, power door locks, air conditioning, sport-tuned electric steering, a cargo area cover and lamp, power windows, and folding outside mirrors. Add $750 to upgrade to the automatic transmission.

Choose the five-door Yaris L and you’ll pay from $16,375. This model comes with the automatic transmission.

SE

The Yaris SE is the sportiest of the three trims and is available on the five-door hatchback only. Priced from $17,200, the SE brings in 16-inch machined alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and your choice of a manual or an automatic transmission. Choose the automatic and you’ll add $800 to your price.

No packages are available, but Toyota does offer individual accessory upgrades. SiriusXM satellite radio ($449), carpeted mats with a trunk mat ($399), and a phone cable and charge package ($69) are among the upgrades available.

LE

Toyota prices the three-door Yaris LE from $16,910. This model adds a black front grille with chrome accent and provides a remote keyless entry system. The LE is also equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, HD radio, and cruise control.

Choose the five-door Yaris LE and you’ll pay from $17,285.

CarsDirect Tip

As pricing gets above $16,000, it puts the Yaris in direct competition with more sophisticated competitors. That's why the best Yaris value is the entry-level L, which plays to the Toyota's strength as reliable, inexpensive transportation.
