2018 BMW 8-Series: Preview, Pricing, Release Date

Model Preview

After a more than 20-year absence, BMW is finally bringing back the flagship 8-Series nameplate. This all-new coupe will arrive in time for the 2018 model year and take the place of the 6-Series Coupe, which BMW has discontinued.

The 2018 BMW 8-Series will be a mashup of past and present designs, as it takes key cues from its predecessor, including its famed flared rear wheel arches and slanted nose but retains current BMW styling, including the bold kidney grille and chiseled body lines.

A more performance-oriented M8 will push the aggressive looks of this coupe further with its large air intakes, four-tailpipe exhaust system, and other updates.

Inside, we expect to see a slick combination of luxury and sportiness from the new 8-Series. Sporty seats will hold occupants snug, but they will also be quite comfortable with its available Merino leather. The center stack will feature a clear graphic structure with no clutter, while the smooth transition from the dashboard to the doors will make the cabin feel like a perfectly crafted envelope. Adding to the sportiness will be carbon-fiber and polished-aluminum accents.

While there is no info on it just yet, we expect the M8 to boast even more sporty bits, including aggressively bolstered seats, more carbon-fiber accents, and lots of Alcantara.

Powertrains remain unknown at this point, but we expect to see at least turbocharged V6 and V8 options. There may even be a V12 option at the top of the range. On top of being more powerful, the M8 will also boast upgraded brakes and suspension for drivers who need top-of-the-line performance.

It’s too early to talk about safety ratings just yet, but we assume BMW will make sure the 8-Series is at least an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

Pricing & Release Date

There is no indication as to when the BMW 8-Series will hit showrooms. Check back for updates on this.

Pricing is also unknown, but look for it to come in a fair amount higher than the outgoing 6-Series Coupe, which ranged from $78,595 to $122,295.

Competition for the 2018 BMW 8-Series will be very limited. Likely the closest competitors to it will be the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and maybe the Lexus LC 500.
