Overview

For consumers tired of seeing only German entries in the upscale sedan segment, the 2018 Volvo S60 continues to offer a stylish design and an extensive list of safety features that set it apart from the BMWs and Mercedes of the world. The S60’s minimalistic approach on the inside will also prove a breath of fresh air, as other automakers are shifting towards more cluttered interiors.

The S60 sedan is available in an all-weather-capable Cross Country line and a stretched wheelbase Inscription trim, as well – both are listed separately.

What's New for 2018

After getting new engine options last year, the S60 is free of significant changes for 2018.

Volvo S60

Choosing Your Volvo S60

The S60 is broken into two different powertrains with three levels of output. The base T5 Dynamic trims feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends its power to the front wheels – all-wheel drive is available as a $2,000 option. The front-wheel-drive T5 Dynamic is the most fuel-efficient trim in the S60 lineup and returns an estimated 25 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

The T6 R-Design features a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine that’s good for 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The engine is also paired to an eight-speed gearbox, which works alongside a standard all-wheel-drive system. This combo takes only a slight hit in fuel economy with an estimated rating of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

The performance-oriented S60 Polestar trim cranks the tune of the supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter motor to 362 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most powerful production four-cylinder engines on the planet. The extra bit of oomph results in a noticeable difference in fuel economy, as the Polestar trim is estimated to get 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. That sacrifice is worth it, though, because the S60 Polestar can hit 60 miles per hour in a scant 4.4 seconds, 1.2 seconds faster than the standard T6 R-Design.

As with the rest of its vehicles (and despite the S60's advanced age), Volvo offers its smallest sedan with a healthy list of safety features, which include automatic high beams, xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with cross traffic alert, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, driver alert control, lane keeping assist, and road sign information. However, Volvo's advanced Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving aid hasn't made the jump to the S60 yet.

The S60 is available in three trims:

Volvo S60

T5 Dynamic

The entry-level T5 trim starts at $35,095, which includes the $995 destination fee, and is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. Standard exterior features on the T5 include headlight washers, a power glass moonroof, heated exterior mirrors, puddle lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Interior features for the T5 trim include leather upholstery, a three-spoke leather steering whee with audio controls, an illuminated shift knob, Bluetooth, electronic climate control, a power driver’s seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and memory settings for the power driver’s seat and exterior mirrors.

There are five available packages for the entry-level T5 trim. The Heated Seats/Heated Steering Wheel Package ($750) adds exactly what its name implies, while the Navigation/Audio Package ($1,600) brings Sensus Navigation and a Harman Kardon audio system to the sedan. The Sport Package ($1,000) includes shift paddles on the steering wheel, a sport chassis, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Vision Package ($1,950) adds a host of technology, including a rear park assist camera, a digital display in the instrument cluster, proximity key, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, as well as rear parking sensors. Lastly, the Technology Package ($1,500) requires consumers add the Vision Package, but it includes adaptive cruise control with queue assist, rain sensors, active high beams, collision warning, driver alert control, distance alert, lane keeping aid, and road sign information.

Volvo S60

T6 R-Design AWD

The T6 AWD R-Design is priced at $48,545 and is powered by the supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The R-Design trim brings a variety of sporty touches to the sedan, including: 19-inch alloy wheels, a black grille, R-Design exterior mirrors, a rear spoiler, and dual integrated tailpipes.

The sportiness continues to the inside of the vehicle with an R-Design steering wheel, R-Design gearshift knob, chrome trim, automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system, R-Design dash inlays, and power front seats.

The T6 also adds adaptive cruise control.

Available packages on the T6 AWD trim include the Blind Spot Information System Package ($925) that adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors. The Climate Package ($1,300) brings heated rear seats, heated windshield wiper nozzles, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats. The Heated Seats/Heated Steering Wheel Package ($750) is also available.

Volvo S60

Polestar

The range-topping Polestar trim is priced at $60,995 and is the most powerful S60 on sale with 362 hp. As a performance-oriented model, the Polestar trim has plenty of functional and stylistic upgrades including 20-inch Polestar wheels, sportier leather upholstery, a rear spoiler, carbon fiber mirror caps, six-piston Brembo brakes, Ohlins shock absorbers, a carbon fiber front splitter, exhaust pipes, Polestar badging, sport pedals, and a grille, steering wheel, and shift lever all designed by Polestar.

There are no available packages for the Polestar trim.

CarsDirect Tip

If all-out performance is what you’re after in an S60, nothing but the Polestar trim will do. For everyone else, the T6 AWD R-Design offers a good blend of performance, fuel economy, and standard features, while having a few touches that make the sedan look even better. Consumers living in cold climates should opt for the Climate Package, while those wanting to get the latest safety features should look into the Blind Spot Information System Package.

Heading into what may be its last year, the current-generation 2018 Volvo S60 offers up a luxurious interior, superb safety scores, and a wide choice of models. But unlike more contemporary Volvos, the S60 lacks their personality and features a design and infotainment system that are dated, while the hottest model can't match the intensity of competitors.

Best Value

The Volvo S60 is offered in five trim levels, a regular and long wheelbase, on- and off-road ride heights, front- and all-wheel-drive systems, and three engine choices. T5 models come with a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, T6 trims feature a 302-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder, while Polestar models are equipped with a 362-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder. All three engines are coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Pricing starts with the $35,095 T5 Dynamic and finish at over $61,000 for the range-topping Polestar.

Looking for the best value, we'd eliminate the niche Cross Country, pricey T6 R-Design, and fun-but-even-pricier Polestar. Families with rear seat legroom needs might want to consider the longer-wheelbase (by three inches) Inscription, but for everyone else, we'd pick the base Dynamic trim.

Included in the starting price are 18-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, start/stop technology, an electric parking brake, leather seats, a sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, an illuminated gearshift knob, Bluetooth, satellite radio, a power driver's seat, a rearview camera, heated outside mirrors, and low-speed automatic emergency braking. The T5 Dynamic also allows access to option packages that can add everything from advanced safety systems to a navigation system. Here’s how we’d build it:

  • Model: 2018 Volvo S60 T5 Dynamic
  • Engine: 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder
  • Output: 240 hp / 258 lb-ft
  • Transmission: Eight-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: All-wheel drive
  • Fuel Economy: 22 City / 33 Hwy
  • Options: All-wheel drive ($2,000), Technology Package ($1,500, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver alert, lane keeping assist, road sign information, automatic high beams, rain-sensing windshield wipers), Vision Package ($1,950, front and rear park assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, TFT instrument display, keyless push-button start), Heated Front Seats and Steering Wheel ($750)
  • Base Price: $35,095 (including a $995 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price: $41,295

Performance

Volvo S60

The base engine offers ample acceleration, the T6 is noticeably faster, while the Polestar is faster still thanks to a broad torque curve. The ride is well-controlled on base models equipped with 18-inch wheels and even more compliant with the Polestar's Ohlins-supplied suspension with its ability to handle even the roughest pavement while exhibiting little body lean in corners. On all models, handling is sharp, direct, and mildly entertaining, while all but the Polestar attain fuel economy numbers of an EPA-estimated 30-plus miles per gallon on the highway.

On the flip side, the transmission doesn't always shift crisply, the T5 engine sounds coarse when pushed, the T6 engine is only available in the expensive AWD R-Design, while the performance of the Polestar, though entertaining, fails to approach that of rivals from BMW and Mercedes-AMG. At the same time, the 19-inch wheels on T5 models make the ride uncomfortably harsh, the Cross Country's extended ride height is for looks rather than capability, while a hefty curb weight in most models discourages spirited driving.

Interior and Exterior

The S60's classic and subtle exterior design encloses an interior that boasts of comfortable front seats as well as high-quality plastic trim and an abundance of soft touch materials. Fit and finish is excellent, while optional wood and aluminum trim bits give it even more of an upmarket look and feel. In addition, the long-wheelbase Inscription offers plenty of legroom in back, while a split-fold rear seat back and wide opening increase the versatility of the generous 12 cubic feet of trunk space.

The S60's design can look frumpy alongside Volvo's newest vehicles – the oddly-styled Cross Country is the worst offender – and is beginning to show its age. At the same time, back seat leg room on most models falls short of competitors, the dashboard is littered with tiny unintuitive buttons, while the seven-inch infotainment system – sans a touchscreen and Apple CarPlay – is cumbersome and woefully outdated.

The Best and Worst Things

The S60 certainly wows with great safety features and comfortable seats, but it also disappoints with styling cues and a performance personality that are bland.

Right For? Wrong For?

Volvo S60

The availability of a wide range of advanced safety features across the lineup is sure to attract safety-focused luxury buyers.

At the same time, the overall heft, lack of steering feedback found on base models, and pricey performance model that lacks the intensity of competitors will have enthusiasts looking elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

The 2018 Volvo S60's tasteful interior, great safety features, and comfortable ride are offset by bland styling, an antiquated infotainment system, and an engine lineup short on refinement that place it only mid-pack in the luxury compact class.
