2018 Volvo XC40: Preview, Pricing, Release Date

, Senior Pricing Analyst - September 21, 2017

Model Preview

The Volvo XC40 will be an all-new model for 2018. Smaller than the XC60, it will compete in the popular compact luxury SUV segment next to vehicles like the Lexus NX and Audi Q3.

Styling for the XC40 will seem familiar in the context of the redesigned XC60 and flagship XC90. The traditional Volvo grille is flanked by signature "Thor's Hammer" design headlights. However, the vehicle's profile is unlike other models and owners will get up to 17 color combinations to choose from with the ability to select a contrasting roof. Large wheels offer a sporty look, although it's unclear if this will result in a sacrifice in ride quality.

Inside the cabin, drivers will be treated to a spacious 9-inch center-mounted infotainment system. Like the latest crop of vehicles, the XC40 will offer connectivity with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as apps like Yelp and Pandora. A number of clever design features will help result in a streamlined interior, like spaces for storage, a dedicated spot for your mobile phone plus Qi wireless charging capability.

Under the hood, the XC40 will initially be powered by a four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain built for efficiency. Power figures and EPA fuel economy estimates are not yet available, but for reference the larger XC60 is rated at 250 hp and gets up to 28 mpg highway. Later, Volvo will reportedly add plug-in hybrid and all-electric variants.

In terms of safety, the XC40 will offer a range of driver assistance features. All versions will get standard low-speed emergency braking (City Safety) with the ability to detect pedestrians and cyclists. Advanced features like semi-autonomous driving (Pilot Assist), rear cross-traffic alert with emergency braking and surround-view camera will also be available.

Expect a full overview closer to launch.

Pricing & Release Date

The 2018 Volvo XC40 is expected to arrive next spring. Dealers are beginning to take pre-orders now.

Official pricing will start at $33,200 for the entry-level T4 model. However, that version is not due to arrive until the summer of 2018.

When the model is introduced, the base model will be the T5 Momentum with all-wheel drive. It will have an MSRP of $35,200, which puts it roughly neck-and-neck with the Audi Q3.
