Preparation Tips for Custom Subwoofer Enclosures

August 9, 2010

If you'd rather try your hand at installing custom subwoofer enclosures yourself rather than hiring a professional, here are some tips to get started.

Subwoofer Enclosure

Building custom subwoofer enclosures ensures that your subwoofer fits perfectly in its intended location. Listed below are some things to do before you actually begin building the enclosure.

Measure and Make Drawings
Measure the area you plan on putting your custom subwoofer enclosure. Work up a couple of drawings so you have a couple of designs to think about before you actually build the enclosures.

Gather the Tools
You need only a few tools for this job. You need a cordless or corded drill with a ⅛" drill bit (to drill pilot holes for the screws) and a Phillips screwdriver tip. You also need a pair of wire strippers/crimpers. A stapler capable of handling ⅜" or ½" wood staples is going to be necessary if you plan on covering the enclosures. So you get the right measurements, you want a tape measure and a pencil, along with a circular saw with a finishing blade. A carpenter's square would be quite handy, and you'll need a pair of quality scissors.

Materials to Buy
Determine the dimensions of the built in subwoofer enclosure and buy enough ¾" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). Get a small bag of 1¼" drywall screws. A tube of clear silicone sealer will properly seal the box when built. If you plan on painting the box, you need the paint. Otherwise, you'll need a large enough piece of felt to cover the enclosure. Speaker connector buttons will allow you to take the box with you when you want to. You'll need the subwoofers and 12-gauge enough speaker wire to run to your amplifier.
