AM General is an American auto company based in Indiana. A world-leader in military and special purpose vehicles, AM General is the designer and manufacturer of the Humvee (High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle). Since 1981, the US military has been contracting Am General to produce Humvees for all US military branches in the armed services.

In May 2006, James A. Armour, President and CEO of AM General, announced the discontinuation of the H1 Alpha series. Due to the limited amount of sales of this first civilian model of the Humvee and the high production costs, the company with GM decided that it was time to retire the model.
