For buyers who think the standard-issue A8 doesn't deliver enough performance, technology and opulence, Audi has crafted the perfect elixir: the S8, which further enhances its flagship sedan.

Providing the S8's muscle is a new 4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that replaces the old model's 5.2 liter V10. It's good for a solid 520 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of 4 seconds flat. Despite this supercar-like performance, the engine delivers better fuel economy, achieving 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway for a combined 19 mpg.

The latest Audi S8 also rewards buyers with an extensive list of standard equipment that includes four-zone climate control, navigation, heated and cooled front seats with driver passenger memory, a heated steering wheel, a sunroof, Bluetooth, and a 19-speaker audio system.

Major changes included:

The 2013 model year ushered in the third-generation S8, following a three-year break in production. This new S8 adopted the A8's basic design, but with a sportier look, thanks to exclusive front and rear fascias and performance wheels. The third-generation S8 came standard with a 4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 520 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque that travelled through an eight-speed automatic on its way out to all four wheels.

2007 - 2009 Audi S8

Major changes included:

In 2007, following three-year lapse in production, Audi released the second-generation S8. This new S8 included the new, more rounded body design of the A8 model, but the S8 received exclusive front and rear fascias to distinguish itself from the A8. Audi refreshed the S8 in 2008 with new headlights and fog lights. Under its hood, the second-gen S8 carried a Lamborghini-sourced 5.2-liter V10 with 450 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. The power went to all four wheels through the quattro all-wheel drive system and a six-speed automatic transmission. Audi again axed the S8 after the 2009 model year run.

2001 - 2003 Audi S8

Major changes included:

Audi launched the S8 in 2001 as the performance variant of its A8 sedan. On the outside, the S8 didn't have many distinguishing features from the base A8, except its performance-oriented wheels. Under the hood, Audi tuned the 4.2-liter V8 to a total of 360 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque -- a 50-horsepower and 15-pound-feet gain over the A8's 4.2-liter engine. The power went through a five-speed automatic transmission and out to all four wheels. Audi discontinued the S8 after the 2003 model year.
