When we think of the future of cars, we often think of science fiction concepts. Some of those might happen, but the real future of cars is probably a bit more down to earth. There are plenty of possibilities for the future and it’s a pleasure to imagine what cars might be like in times to come.
Fuel
The future of transportation won’t include fossil fuels. We know that stocks are rapidly dwindling, and that we need to change in order to lower our carbon footprint. We’re already stepping into the future with electric cars and hybrid cars.
Also on the horizon is the hydrogen fuel cell. We still have to learn how to make these technologies really useful, but that will happen. There will even be other, more advanced ideas that will come in the future of cars.
Automation
In just a short time, Satellite Navigation systems have become indispensable for drivers, and are fitted on most new cars. It’s really just the start of what will come. We rely on a Sat Nav for guidance. In time, we might even rely on them to drive our cars and make sure we don’t have accidents on the road. There has been talk of automated highway systems. Those would cost billions, but if they worked with Sat Navs, we could drastically reduce travel times and the number of accidents on the road.
Flying Cars
The idea of flying cars seems to have died and it’s understandable. The future of cars is almost certainly on the roads, not in the air. It would be almost impossible to arrange for flying cars, even if we had the technology. More importantly, there has been so much invested in the highway infrastructure of the country and of the world, that we can’t afford to abandon it.
We need to ensure the roads don’t become too crowded, so part of the future of cars involves improved public transportation systems. That will keep cars off the road, especially in dense urban areas, and will speed up the flow of traffic.
Car Shape
Car styles go through phases, but cars in general have become smaller and more aerodynamic over the decades. To a degree, that will continue in the future of cars. Smaller vehicles will be ideal for cities, with larger vehicles for family touring.
It’s quite possible that many families will just own smaller vehicles, urban concept cars, and rent larger ones when they need them.
Power
The days of the V8 engine are almost over, if they haven’t already passed. They use too much precious fuel, and they’re too expensive to run. Smaller engines, ones that are more efficient, are vital in the cars of the future.
Engineers keep working toward more efficient vehicles, and this will be a continuing trend in cars of the future. There will be far more changes under the hood than we’ll see outside in the cars of the future. The one certainty is that there will definitely be cars in the future.
