Future Concept Cars from the Top Manufacturers

May 10, 2010

Everybody has heard the stories of the future concept cars from the 50’s. We were all supposed to be driving personal flying cars that drive themselves by now. Then there’s the “push me, pull you” concept with driver’s seats at both ends, with drivers sitting back to back. The designs you can see for future concept cars at the big auto shows these days are more down to earth. Below you will find short paragraphs detailing some Toyota, BMW, Ford, Chrysler and Dodge concept cars.

Ford Concept Cars

One of the Ford Concept Cars introduced recently is the Ford Focus for coming years. The Focus is going to undergo an overhaul which will combine the two designs for the European and American markets into a single, funkier four door hatchback or a luxurious looking four door sedan. Buyers of these newer models Focuses may see new versions of Ford’s Sync, with what’s being called the ‘mouse’. This is actually a small, four directional toggle that controls a new media, or ‘Infotainment’ systems incorporating eight inch high resolution screens, wireless connectivity, audio systems from Sony and USB, SD Card and RCA inputs.

Chrysler Concept Cars

Chrylser hopes its recent teaming with Fiat will bring about momentous changes and increases in sales. One of the Chrysler concept cars rumored for the future is a rebadged version of the Fiat Lancia Delta and 500. The concept for the 2012 Chrysler Town and Country, the luxury version of the very popular Dodge Ram Minivan, will receive changes to the interior, giving it three trim option levels of luxury. Chrysler also plans on introducing hybrid models of the Town and Country in the near future.

BMW Concept Cars

One of the BMW Concept Cars introduced at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show is Concept Gran Coupe. BMW wants to use this concept car to show a variation of the future of its design direction. BMW sees this car as a melding of the excitement of a high performance sports car and the luxury of a Gran Turismo. This new Gran Coupe will have BMW’s trademark long wheel base for stability, the domed hood for aerodynamics and a shortened front overhang. For efficiency, most lighting will be LED instead of incandescent.

Dodge Concept Cars

One Dodge Concept Car of note is the Dodge Charger. New versions of this venerable Dodge name will have smooth, flowing lines to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiently. LED lighting will be incorporated in future models, in both front and rear. It has been rumored that the door handles on new Charger models will be in the roof line, in order to support the illusion of a two door coupe.

Toyota Concept Cars

One of the Toyota Concept Cars making the biggest waves and generating the most talk is the FT-HS Concept Car. Chiharu Tamaru, lead designer and planner envisions this car as the concept for the 21st century for Toyota: eco-friendly performance sports cars. This car is built around Toyota’s peppy 3.5 liter V-6 and will be capable of performance, like four seconds from zero to sixty miles per hour. This power plant will be the fossil fuel burning side of a highly efficient hybrid system. Tamaru likens the performance of the FT-HS to cars such as the Corvette and the Porsche 911.
