The more powerful of BMW's entry-level 1 Series models, the 135 is available in coupe and convertible variants. The rear-wheel drive subcompact has been in on sale in Europe since 2004—where it's also built as a hatchback—but didn't reach U.S. showrooms until 2008.

With 300 horsepower on tap—70 more than 128—the turbocharged 135 accelerates more smartly than its naturally aspirated sibling. It also has a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, eight-way power front seats, adaptive xenon headlights, an aerodynamic kit, and a sunroof (coupe).

Major changes included:

In 2008, BMW introduced its new, entry-level luxury car, dubbed the 1 Series. Topping out the 1 Series range, with exception to the M model, was the 135i. The 135i came in a convertible or coupe format, and carried the same basic body style as the rest of the BMW lineup. Under the first-gen 135i's hood was a twin-turbocharged 3-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produced 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. In 2011, BMW replaced the twin-turbo engine with a TwinPower Turbo 3-liter engine that used a single twin-scroll turbo in place of the two turbochargers, which increase efficiency while maintaining the same power ratings. The 2012 model received a mildly refreshed fascia with new headlights.
