With its 2011 335d BMW has proven that a diesel engine can have a place in a true luxury performance sport sedan. The 335d uses BMW's advanced 3.0-liter TwinPower direct-injected turbodiesel 6-cylinder, making 265 hp and a tire-melting 425 lb-ft. of torque while averaging an excellent 23 city/36 highway mpg. Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, all that torque brings a 6.0-second 0-60 time. Sitting with the 335i atop the 3-Series range, the diesel-burner comes with a full array of standard luxury equipment, though the enticing option packages can quickly add thousands to the car's $44,150 base price.
The $3,750 M-Sport package adds sport seats, an increased top speed limiter (150 instead of 130 mph), a sport suspension and other performance, exterior and interior upgrades. BMW now joins VW and Audi in offering compelling diesel models to a wary U.S. market.
