While German luxury cars still maintain a performance edge on Japanese and America competitors, their lead isn't what it used to be. The BMW 5 Series once reigned supreme as the midsize sedan of favored by serious drivers: Car & Driver magazine named it to six straight 10Best lists between 1997 and 2002.

And while the entry-level 528i is no longer the obvious choice in its class, it remains a solid choice. A turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine generates 240 horsepower delivered to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. And it's available with all-wheel drive.

Major changes included:

With the introduction of BMW's sixth-generation 5 Series, the 528i offered a more aggressive design with pronounced grill and seemingly wider stance. Although not quite as powerful as its 5 Series siblings, the 528i appealed to the high-end car buyer who places more emphasis on luxury than performance.

Major changes included:

When first introduced, the 5 Series's controversially-designed fifth generation did not have a 528i in its lineup. By 2008, however, the 528i was back in production with very little fanfare. The new 528i was powered by a 3-liter six-cylinder engine with 230 horsepower. Although still one of BMW's more fuel efficient models, the new 528i placed more emphasis on luxury and gadgetry.

Major changes included:

The fourth-generation BMW 528i is characterized by light alloy suspension which helps improve performance, while the overall lighter weight of the car increases fuel efficiency. As an introductory model for the legendary 5 Series, the 528i has always been marketed towards the German auto enthusiast who still values fuel economy. This 528i is remembered for its dual headlights under glass with light rings.
