Take one luxury sedan, blend it with an SUV, and you'll get what BMW calls a progressive activity vehicle. The BMW 535 Gran Turismo is one such model, based on the popular 5 Series sedan, but imbued with SUV elements to create a distinctive, tall hatchback design.
What's New for 2017
For 2017, BMW keeps everything about the BMW 535i Gran Turismo the same. This model is a full carryover from 2016.
Choosing Your BMW 535i Gran Turismo
The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is composed of two model lines, 535i and 550i, the latter with a twin-turbo V8 engine and all-wheel drive. The 535 Gran Turismo relies upon twin-turbo technology too, but in this case, you get an inline-six cylinder engine. Further, unlike the top-of-the-line 550i model, this one offers standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, just like the sedans.
All models are powered by a 3-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This model makes an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Choose xDrive and those estimates are 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. You’ll also enjoy a 0-to-60 mph time of 6 seconds.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch double spoke light alloy wheels set within run-flat, all-season tires. LED fog lights and chrome-line trim are included. BMW also provides 14-way power front seats with lumbar support, Dakota leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a 12-speaker audio system, navigation, and a panoramic moonroof.
On the safety front, the 535i Gran Turismo is supplied with dynamic cruise control, front and rear park distance control, and programmable daytime running lights.
Two equipment lines are also available: luxury and M Sport. The luxury line ($2,000) brings in 19-inch light alloy wheels, anthracite or dark wood trim, and a premium selection of Nappa and Dakota leathers.
The M Sport ($3,350) adds 19-inch V Spoke wheels, shadowline exterior trim, an aerodynamic kit, and a sport package. Also included is an M steering wheel, an anthracite headliner, and an increased top speed limiter.
