BMW's 7 Series first appeared in the 1978, and offered a more athletic alternative to luxury rivals like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Now in its fifth generation, the current 7 Series lineup starts with the 740, available in short or long wheelbases, and with all-wheel-drive.
It features a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, making it the first 7 Series sedan powered by fewer than eight cylinders in over 20 years. With 315 horsepower, though, a new 740's output handily exceeds that of 12-cylinder variants from the early 1990s.
