The Z4 features an attractive, classically proportioned roadster design combined with the practicality of a power-retractable hardtop and the excellent rear-wheel drive dynamics BMW customers crave. Trim levels include the sDrive30i, the sDrive35i and the new-for-2011 sDrive35is. The sDrive30i is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder making 255 hp, mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Stepping up to the sDrive35i brings BMW's award-winning N54 twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder with 300 hp and either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual.
Revised N54 engine mapping brings horsepower up to 335 for the new sDrive35is, which comes standard with the 7-speed automated manual and an overboost function allowing 37 extra lb-ft. of torque in short bursts on demand. A 3-stage Driving Dynamics Control system allows driver-selectable settings affecting steering response, throttle response and shift times. While the Z4 can't match the competing Porsche Boxster and Cayman in raw visceral performance, its refined, luxurious cabin and excellent powertrains make it worthy of a test drive.
