When it comes to the top minivans for fuel economy, the list is actually quite surprising. Many people may think that minivans get terrible gas mileage due to being large and un-aerodynamic. This is true to an extent, but many strides have been taken to get the minivan MPG ratings into the range of about 25 miles per gallon. Considering that most minivans at the minimum have a V6 engine, and quite typically come with V8 or V10 engines, getting 25 miles per gallon or so is great for minivan mileage. Here is a minivan comparison for fuel economy.
This is the most fuel efficient minivan there is on the market, and is by a couple miles per gallon. The big reason why is because it is an exception to the rule. The M5 is not powerful and only comes with a four cylinder 2.3 liter engine. It comes with a manual or automatic transmission which would effect the fuel economy. The manual gets slightly higher ratings at 28 miles per gallon on the highway, and 22 miles per gallon in the city. The automatic can get 27 miles per gallon on the highway, and 21 miles per gallon in the city. The Mazda M5 is also a small minivan, so it is also lighter.
26 MPG/19 MPG
The next batch of minivans creates a tie at the 26 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 miles per gallon in the city range. There are many minivans that have this economy rating. These minivans are all similar in size and shape so they are very comparable. The list of these models are the:
- Dodge Caravan SXT & Grand Caravan
- Honda Odyssey
- Toyota Sienna
- Chrysler Town & Country
It is recommended that you go with one of the last three on this list over any, since they feature great MPG ratings, but are also the top minvans in the class. The Odyssey may be big, but has technology that allows it to shut off some of the cylinders from being in use while on the highway to lessen fuel consumption. The Dodge models are similar in that they have a flexfuel engine.
25 MPG/18 MPG
The next batch creates another tie, this time at the 25 miles per gallon on the highway and 18 miles per gallon in the city ranks. This list is even bigger than the previous, since most minivans now fall in this range. This list consists of, to name a few, the:
- Hyundai Entourage
- Nissan Quest
- Kia Sedona
- Buick Terranza
Many of these minivans feature a powerful V6 engine ranging from 3.3 liters to 3.9 liters. The more power and liters there are, the more gas that will be used up. From this list, only the Entourage and the Sedona make the lists for top minivans in general, so those are recommended over some of the other cars on the list.
As you can see, just because you want a minivan, does not mean you need to sacrifice fuel economy.
