Diesel gas prices are typically higher than regular gasoline. Diesel fuel is not as popular with regular cars, but with larger trucks, diesel is the fuel of choice. The average price of diesel is around $2.85 per gallon. Regular gasoline is priced lower, at around 13 cents less coming in at $2.72. That is only about a 5% difference in price. However, diesel is about 35% more efficient than gasoline is when it comes to the overall fuel economy ratings. This means diesel gets you the better bang for your buck at the pumps when compared to regular gasoline.
The average price of premium gasoline is around $3.20, meaning that diesel is much more cost efficient than premium. Compressed Natural Gas, or CNG is also a type of fuel used in cars. The average price of CNG is around $1.80. E85, or Ethanol 85 is becoming a popular option due to its price. E85 is priced at around $2.30, and has a lower octane level than regular gasoline (87). It definitely has its drawbacks due to less fuel economy, but it is much cheaper than gasoline. E85 is about 25% less efficient than gasoline, and about 40 to 50% less efficient than diesel, and is priced in accordance with that drop off of fuel economy.
One last source of fuel recently would be electric power, which is very cheap. The approximate cost for transportation electricity is 11 cents per kilowatt hour. Electricity is the cheapest way to power your cars, but of course, not all cars can be powered by electricity alone.
