Tips for Car Buyers: How to Know When to Buy

July 1, 2010

One of the most important considerations for potential car buyers is when to purchase a vehicle. Knowing when a car buyer's market exists (rather than a car seller's market) is the first step toward getting a great deal on your vehicle. There are other factors that you should consider when planning how and when to buy your vehicle as well. Certain methods of payment (i.e. cash for cars) are likely to earn you a lower overall price than others, and some auto dealers offer specials throughout the year at different times as well. Generally, because each market differs slightly, it's best to figure out exactly how your area tends to compare with the national auto market before you plan to buy a vehicle.

Tip 1 -- Follow the National and Local Trends

The car market fluctuates as a result of many different factors. These include the general economy, the time of year, new models of vehicles and innovations to the field, and much more. If you're planning to buy a new car and you have a good sense of which type of vehicle you're interested in, spend some time following the prices of those vehicles on the national and local auto markets for a few months before you plan to buy. This will give you a sense of exactly how the prices for that car fluctuate. It will also show you the range of fluctuation as well, so you'll be better able to tell if the price you see on a car is a local high or low.

Tip 2 -- Purchase before the New Model Year

The cheapest time for cars is typically right before the new model year becomes available. Dealers are trying to get rid of their old stock at this point, so they typically offer vehicles at some of the lowest prices possible right before they fill their lots again with new vehicles. Take advantage of this to get a great price.

Tip 3 -- Look for Promotions

Most auto dealers and lots have certain special promotions that go on throughout the year. This means there will be certain times when cars are either available on a discounted, sale rate or when you're able to take advantage of other options in order to receive a better deal on your vehicle. These promotions vary from state to state and even from dealership to dealership, but it's a good idea to watch out for them for a few months before you plan to buy a car. This will give you a good sense of what kinds of savings you're potentially able to get on a vehicle, and you'll be able to take advantage of the sale that gives you the best deal.

For more information about sales in your area, speak with a certified dealer or look online for additional questions that you may have about buying a car.
