Why is there a Higher Duty Rate when You Import Trucks from Japan?

December 28, 2010

The duty rate to import trucks from Japan is 25%, which is the same rate that Japan charges for cars being imported into its country. This high duty rate helps to level the field and protect the US truck market. If Japan lowered its duty rate on imported cars, the United States would most likely lower the rate on imported trucks. Importing a car or truck from Japan is expensive and is not a big market. All vehicles in Japan are right hand drive, which involves an expensive conversion to make it easy to drive in the United States.
