Adding Car Insurance for Teenagers to Your Policy

May 11, 2010

If you have found it difficult to obtain car insurance for teenagers, you may find that the problem can be solved by adding them to your own policy. By following a few steps, you will find that it is relatively easy to achieve this.

Step 1 - Check Existing Coverage

Start by inspecting the existing policy to determine whether it makes any mention of car insurance for teenagers. If you have taken out a policy solely for yourself, it's likely to say that no one else can drive the car. This does not mean that the insurers can't amend this if requested. Check what conditions the insurance company put in place when amendments to a policy are required.

Step 2 - Gather Information

Gather all the relevant information in relation to the young driver that you want to add to your policy. The insurance company will require all the same details that you had to provide when you obtained the policy in the first place. It will also be prudent to get confirmation of the date that the driver passed their test and the date on which they received their license. Work out an estimation of how often the teenager will be using the car.

Step 3 - Type of Coverage

Think about the type of coverage that is required from the new driver car insurance. If you only want the teenager to have limited cover or you want conditions to be put in place, these should be finalized prior to contact with the insurance company. Where a single car is being used by multiple drivers, it is prudent to obtain car insurance for teenagers at the same level as the existing policy.

Step 4 - Inception

When young driver car insurance needs to be added to an existing policy, you may find that it is best to wait for renewal. Amending a policy midway through the period of insurance can attract a fee that will be in addition to the extra premium. You will usually be required to confirm any changes to the insurance company at renewal in any case, so car insurance for teenagers can be arranged at this stage.

Step 5 - Contact Insurer

If the website of your insurance company only makes use of an online form for new quotes, avoid using this for car insurance for teenagers. The insurance company will not automatically be aware that this is an addition to an existing policy if you use this method. Contact them by telephone instead and have your policy number on hand so that your record can easily be found. Using the telephone will make it easier to outline what is required from the additional coverage. You should be able to get an instant quote for the additional premium, if your insurers confirm that they can provide the coverage. You will also be in an ideal position to negotiate on terms and deductible to see if this makes a difference to the cost of the premium.
