Benefits to Personal Umbrella Liability Insurance For Car Insurance

June 25, 2010

Having a personal umbrella liability insurance policy can be a great addition to your existing car insurance. Your car insurance should normally cover you on most accidents. However, in today's society, there are many lawsuits that arise from car accidents. If you are involved in an accident, and you are deemed at fault, you can be sued for negligence by the other parties if your actions warranted it. For example, a negligent action could be something like texting while driving. If this is the case, you can be in for a very large lawsuit, and your liability car insurance likely will not be large enough to cover it. That is where umbrella liability coverage comes into play. An umbrella policy adds an enormous amount of coverage to your existing liability coverage. The policies normally range anywhere from one million to five million dollars. This seems like a high amount of coverage, however, lawsuits that deal with multiple cars can get extremely costly as you may have to cover medical bills, lost wages, and damages for multiple cars and people. The liability coverage is good to have, and won't be tapped into unless you need it. You may be thinking to yourself that millions of dollars of coverage sounds like it would be an expensive addition to your policy. However, umbrella coverage will only be about $200 to $300 extra per year. When you already pay $1,500 plus for insurance, an extra 10-20% doesn't sound as bad. Think about the benefits of having such liability coverage.
