Car Insurance: What to Do after a Hit and Run

January 27, 2012

If you are ever involved in a hit-and-run car accident, you'll have to act quickly and follow certain steps to ensure that your car insurance will provide coverage for you. Therefore, here's a quick guide to help you if you're ever involved in a hit-and-run accident:

Step 1 - Call the Police

Immediately after a hit-and-run accident, or as soon as you discover your car has been hit, call the police. Ask them to come out and take a look at your vehicle, and to give you a police report. You will need this when filing your insurance claim.

Step 2 - Call Your Insurance Company

After you call the police, call your insurance company next and inform them that you have just been involved in a hit-and-run. The insurance company will probably tell you to wait for the police officer and get a police report.

Step 3 - File Your Claim

As soon as you have the police report, make sure your accident checklist is followed and you take pictures of the scene immediately.

If you are well-prepared, you will already have an accident checklist and a disposable 35mm camera in your glove box.

Once you have the all the required information with the police report, and photos of your vehicle, contact your insurance company and ask them how you should submit your claim.

The insurance company may send your claim form in the mail or they may direct you to a website where you can download it. Either way, fill out the claim form as completely as possible and send it to your insurance company. If you were in the vehicle when it was hit, make sure that you get checked out by a doctor or go to the hospital.
