Getting Car Insurance in Delaware: Tips for Getting the Lowest Price with Maximum Coverage

January 27, 2012

When looking for car insurance, Delaware residents must use many of the same tips that residents of other states use for getting the lowest quotes without sacrificing coverage. But there are a few ways that Delaware auto insurance can end up being cheaper with just as much coverage. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping for auto insurance in Delaware.

Low Risk Cars

Each vehicle is rated on a number scale for risk. A lower risk car is said to be safer, and therefore Delaware auto insurance for those kinds of cars will always be cheaper than for cars that are higher risk.

Multiple Cars

In Delaware, some insurance companies will give you a discount if you own more than one car. If you have more than one vehicle, make sure that you mention this when shopping around for your insurance quote.

Safety Classes

This can be a great option if you have bad credit, no credit or a bad driving record. State auto insurance quotes could be reduced simply by taking a road safety class or additional driving lessons. If you have no credit or a bad driving record, you probably already know how that can negatively affect the price of car insurance, but safety or driving classes can counteract those negative spots and lower your quotes.

Collision vs. Comprehensive Coverage

Two optional add-ons that may be attractive when shopping for Delaware auto insurance are collision and comprehensive. Collision covers you if you are in a collision with another car or strike anything else. Comprehensive does not cover collisions, but does cover you in the event of almost any other damage such as theft, weather-related damage and cracked and broken windshields. Comprehensive coverage is much cheaper than collision, so it may be worth going with that instead of collision coverage. It's a risk, but easier on your wallet.

Shop Around

You don't have to go with the first quote you get, and it will pay to compare quotes. Contact several different state auto insurance providers and then choose the policy with the lowest price.
