Getting the Right Auto Insurance: Theft

May 6, 2010

Getting your automobile stolen is a real threat for everyone who drives, which is why many people buy auto insurance theft protection. Not only is it a way to protect yourself, but it is a fairly easy way to purchase peace of mind for those who live or work in dangerous areas with high crime rates. Here is how to find the right car theft insurance and what to do in order to buy it.

Picking Your Company

Find out if your main car insurer offers this type of insurance and if your policy covers it. If not, do your research so you can find one that does. You may have a hard time finding one that offers that type of coverage as a standalone policy, so you may have to switch providers if needed. In addition, when you are looking for a provider for theft insurance you will want to find one with the best coverage for the best rate. Many insurance providers have an online feature that allows you to compare prices depending on certain factors. This would be a great tool to look for and use during the quest. So seek this out and use it when you can. You may want to find a policy that also covers items that are stored or in the car in case it is stolen. Not all policies will do that, but some should be able to offer that as part of the policy for additional charges.

Ask about Fees and Questions

Most everything has fees attached to it, and insurance polices are no different. So ask about hidden fees and taxes to find out about the total cost. You may also ask about how the claiming process works, in case you will ever need to claim the policy, if your automobile has been stolen. If you can, get this all in writing, that way you have written proof of what they said in case you ever need it. You may always want to keep a copy with you, and not in your car, which would deem it useless in case it was stolen. Also, ask when your policy becomes valid and active.

Buy Policy

Once you have picked your provider, you can go ahead and buy the policy. Keep all info and papers they give you, which you should store with the rest of your important documents. Try to keep all of your info updated and payments on time, so your policy stays active at all times. Otherwise, it will become void and no longer will be protecting you from auto theft. So do your best to keep it valid at all costs.

What to Do in Case of Auto Theft

If you car is stolen, you will need to contact both law enforcement and your insurance company. They both will get active in it and you will have to wait out until your claim is approved. Other than that, you cannot do much but wait and hope for the best when it comes to auto theft.
