Theft Insurance Coverage Explained

May 6, 2010

In the event your vehicle is broken into and items are stolen, you will need theft insurance coverage in order to recoup your loses. Typically auto theft insurance is included in your comprehensive insurance coverage, thus you will need full coverage auto insurance in order to take advantage of this. In fact, auto theft and vandalism rates are so important that insurance companies use this data in order to determine the risks you provide based on crimes rates in your location. If you live in a high crime area, your automobile insurance coverage will be higher than if you live in an area with less theft and vandalism.

Coverage

The only coverage you can purchase for your vehicle to ensure you are protected against theft is comprehensive coverage. Your deductible will be affected by the crime rates in your zip code and what vehicle you are driving, and how often that type of car is stolen. In the unfortunate event that your vehicle is taken you will be protected by this insurance. Without it, you have no recourse.

Property inside the Car

While your comprehensive policy will cover you in case your vehicle is taken, one thing it will not do is cover your personal property. Having your vehicle vandalized and broken into is bad enough, but losing personal property is twice as bad. In these cases your homeowners insurance will cover the loss of any items inside of the vehicle, assuming you can prove that you actually owned them at the time they were taken.
