Top Car Insurance Company Reviews

March 12, 2010

Looking at car insurance company reviews can be a good tool when you are deciding on where you should buy your coverage. If you understand that insurance is really only worthwhile if the company pays your claim when you file it, then you will know that not all companies are the same. Some are more reliable than others. The problem is, if you only base your judgment on personal experience, at the point where you find out a company is bad, it’s too late. That’s why reading reviews of what a company’s customers have to say can really keep you from getting into a bad situation. Here are some sample ratings found by searching for some of the top companies.

Allstate

Many of the reviews you might find about Allstate will talk about the service received. In general, it seems that a good number of their customers have been satisfied when they needed to file a claim. There have been a few here and there that have said they weren’t dealt with fairly. If there’s one common theme in terms of complaints, though, it’s pricing—and price increases in particular. So, at least according to customers who have chosen to comment, it seems that Allstate is overall good at taking care of claims, but their coverage might not be a bargain compared to other companies. Of course, each person’s results can be different.

American Family

American Family seems to be a company where the agent and area where you live can make a big difference. It seems that most complaints leveled at the company are directed more towards the agents than the overall insurance company. One common theme, though, is that they charge too much for teenage drivers. Still, overall American Family gets great ratings in terms of dependability and customer service.

Esurance

Esurance is one of the newer companies out there, but they have had a lot of customer volume in their time in business. One of the reasons is that overall they are ranked as one of the least expensive companies out there. Overall, the customer service ratings in terms of claim payment reliability are good. Some common complaints, though, are the lack of flexibility in regards to payment options and the fact that premiums seem to go up fairly frequently on renewal. Overall, though, they have a good customer satisfaction record.

Farmers

Farmers Insurance gets fairly good reviews from its customers, but perhaps not as high as some of the other companies. Most people report good service—even when filing a claim. However, some have apparently had issues with claims (but most of those have worked through an agent—so perhaps the problem isn’t the company, but that particular insurance agent). A common theme in the reviews is that Farmers Insurance isn’t the cheapest around, but that it’s good. There are a few, though, who have gotten some inexpensive premiums from them in comparison to other companies. Of course, each person’s situation is different and no insurance company is the best fit for every driver.

Geico

Geico seems to get good reviews overall from their customers. While you might expect that people will save with Geico (that’s their big claim to fame, right?), that doesn’t appear to be their only strong point. Most people report good results from Geico’s customer service. Claims seem to be dealt with pretty reliably. Of course, the majority of the customers who have reviews out there do say that they saved money through Geico. One complaint that shows up occasionally, though, is that the online quote system isn’t always accurate. Some people report getting one quote, but then when they try to buy their policy the price is suddenly higher or there are other issues. Once again, no two people can be expected to have precisely the same experience, but looking at common themes, Geico seems to be a winner with their customers.

MetLife

Most people think of MetLife in terms of life insurance, but they do offer auto coverage, too. They have reasonably good, but not great reviews from their customers. Some say that they saved good amounts of money on their policies. High rates doesn’t seem to be a common complaint. Poor service—especially when taking care of a claim, does seem to come up fairly frequently, though. Of course, there are at least as many people who say their claims were taken care of quite well.

Nationwide

Nationwide has been around for a long time and they’ve got a lot of customers. With that kind of volume you’d expect to find a lot of reviews—and you probably will. The company rates fairly well with their customers. A few people report problems with claims, but most report exceptional customer service and dependability. One thing you probably won’t find frequently in reviews is bargain pricing from Nationwide. Many of their customers concede that they are higher than other companies in terms of the premiums, but that the added service and dependability when you have a claim make it worthwhile. Still, some customers report lower rates than even some of the companies that are known for bargain premiums.

Progressive

Many customers rank Progressive fairly high. Among their reasons are customer service and reliability. Of course, good pricing (one thing Progressive bases a lot of its advertisement on) is another common theme. Still, not everyone has been satisfied and some customers have complained about inaccurate quotes and “hidden” fees.

State Farm

Like all customer reviews, State Farm’s reliability ratings with their customers are not universal—but they are quite commonly high. Most people report that State Farm’s claims of being there for you when you need it are proven true. As mentioned before, that isn’t universal and some customers say that State Farm dropped the ball on them, but they are the minority. Most people don’t complain about State Farm being expensive, but they also don’t claim they are cheap. That means the company is probably middle of the road in terms of pricing.

Travelers

Travelers is a company that falls into the average end of good from their customer reviews. Most people seem to be happy with their rates, but not everyone feels the same way in terms of customer service. Some claim to have had excellent results when they filed a claim, but others say they were left in the cold. So, it all depends on each independent situation—but overall their ratings are good—just not great.

21st Century

21st Century is a company that is part of the AIG umbrella of companies. They seem to get reasonably good ratings from their customers. In fact, overall, they appear to be rather middle of the road (at least middle of the road for the “good” companies). Some rate their pricing competitive, but others complain about it. Some report great customer service, while others say they’ve been let down by 21st Century. So, this is definitely a company where results may vary.

When shopping for insurance there are a lot of variables to consider. The reliability and customer satisfaction ratings of their current and former clients should definitely be considered. The truth is, though, those type of ratings always come through each individual person’s particular viewpoint. That means that even a good company can get bad ratings from some of their customers. You probably don’t get along with everyone you know, do you? So, you need to look around at a lot of reviews and take the overall current running through them into account when you make your decision. Don’t just focus on one positive or one negative review.
