Where to Get Good Car Insurance for Salvage Titles

May 6, 2010

Owing to salvage titles being ‘unknown quantities’, it can be extremely challenging to find cheap car insurance for salvage vehicles. Accidents make cars more vulnerable to future damage or potential failure, and underwriters are not keen to put risk into previously damaged cars. Some states require a salvage title to prove the vehicle has been rebuilt to a roadworthy standard and other states treat junk titles the same way as they treat salvage. Always be sure before you purchase a salvage vehicle that you will be able to obtain insurance on it or, if insurance will be limited, how limited.

1 - Allstate

Allstate offers coverage on salvage titles, but they will want to know exact details about any accidents. They will make decisions based on each individual vehicle, and the case in question. Be prepared to answer serious questions about the history of the vehicle, how you got it, whether it was salvaged due to an accident, or purchased through an auction. Be aware you will have to provide accurate details and proof of it being roadworthy.

2 – Nationwide

Nationwide has details of salvage plans and information about what to do if you car has been totaled. Again, you will have to answer specific questions as to the extent of the damage incurred and they will assess your individual case. If you were already insured with Nationwide and it was them who assessed your car as totaled after an accident, they will offer to sell you back the vehicle. They will reinsure it depending on the extent of the damage.

3 – Progressive

Progressive also has details of policies that are available on salvaged titles. Like all other companies, be prepared for questions, proof requested and other details they will need to make their decision.
