Idling is when your vehicle has its engine running, but it's not in motion. There are several consequences of these actions, and there are benefits to reducing the amount of time you idle.
1. Save Gas
Idling can burn up a lot more gas than you think. Idling for just two minutes is the equivalent to driving approximately one mile. Depending on your situation, you may idle anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes every day. This can add up to a lot of gas that is wasted. Idling for ten minutes can make you lose 2% of your gas tank. This can all be averted by just turning off your engine while you wait. Usually idling happens in a parking lot waiting for someone, or even by warming your car up in the winter. Most cars can be "warm" within 30 seconds, but the misconception is that it takes five or more minutes.
2. Save Money
Lowering your fuel consumption means that you will be saving money. You won't need to buy as much gas, since you will be saving it. It will last longer, which means less fill ups, and more money in your pocket. Fines can be given in idling law states, so cutting down your idling will help you save money as well.
3. Less Emissions
Vehicle idling means your engine is running and you aren't moving. That means the normal emissions your car gives off are also being given off when you're idling. If you turn the car off to reduce your idling, you would be decreasing your total carbon footprint.
