Cheap Smog Check? 6 Things to Verify

June 4, 2010

Even if you manage to find a cheap smog check it is important to notice what is being done. Many inspection stations and garages have gotten in trouble because they offer cheap tests but do not actually inspect the car. This test is necessary to know what pollutants and emissions are being released from the engines exhaust system. There are special parts that are checked as a way to control emissions. The requirements are all different in each state though there are also federal requirements.

  1. Measuring the Exhaust: The device that is used for the smog check is attached to your tailpipe. Then when the car is idling, the device will measure the emissions. The numbers that are recorded will then be compared to the state standard numbers. Some of the emissions that are measured include nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and hydrocarbons.
  2. The Muffler: The technician giving the inspection will also ensure that the muffler is working properly. The muffler produces a different type of pollution, noise from the exhaust. This muffler acts like a silencer. This muffler is installed in the exhaust system so it is important that this system is also checked during the smog test.
  3. Under the Hood: A good technician will also check to make sure that all hoses and pipes are properly connected and nothing is leaking. If there is leaking in the engine, then dangerous emissions can be released by evaporation. In particular hydrocarbons enter the atmosphere this way. Hydrocarbons will affect the ozone layer and are very destructive.
  4. Internal Computer: The technician should also check the internal computer to ensure it is working properly. Many times this will be able to show if your exhaust system is working properly. It can also be used to help pin point what the problem is if your car does not pass the inspection. The computer will produce several standard codes for any problems that have occurred.
  5. Certification: You need to make sure that you get your smog test done at a certified center. Many states such as California require that this test be done at special smog test inspection center. However there are other states that allow mechanics and repair shops to provide inspection. Make sure you see the inspection certification before you get your smog tested.
  6. Repairs Correlate with the Failed Test: If your vehicle fails the test, then it is important that the repair that is recommended matches the problem. If this does not match up, then the mechanic may be trying to cheat you with repairs that do not affect the production of smog. If you have a high hydrocarbon reading then this is most likely due to bad wiring to the spark plugs, a dirty air filter, or a slow O2 filter. If your carbon monoxide readings are too high then it is most likely due to a dirty air filter, faulty ignition, or the throttle being full of carbon. If your O2 is too high then the air to fuel mixture is not correct in the engine. For high nitrogen oxide levels are related to the exhaust system, most specifically the catalytic converter.
