Advantages and Disadvantages of Remanufactured Transmissions

September 29, 2009

Transmission replacements always induce sticker shock, so many drivers opt for remanufactured transmissions. But are they a good value in the long run?

Remanufactured Transmission

Remanufactured transmissions are used transmissions that have been completely disassembled and rebuilt using new parts for the major internal components while using the used transmission casing our housing.

Benefits of Remanufactured Transmissions
Many people purchase remanufactured transmissions because of the huge cost savings versus purchasing a new transmission. In many cases, a remanufactured transmission will save 50 percent or more over the cost of a new one. With modern transmissions costing more than $2,000 or $3,000, the savings can be considerable. In addition to the price, many remanufactured transmissions come with warranties that can be between one year and three years, depending on the company that remanufactures the transmission.

Remanufactured transmissions are also good for the environment. It requires a lot less energy and consumption of natural resources to remanufacture a transmission than to produce a new one. Many industry analysts and experts estimate that remanufactured transmissions use only about 1/10 the energy and natural resources needed to manufacture a new one. Also, the manufacturing of parts required for remanufactured transmissions produces considerably less carbon base emissions than manufacturing a complete new transmission.

These days, companies that remanufacture transmissions utilize technology that makes the transmissions more affordable and reliable than they have ever been. In fact, many large trucking and shipping companies make it a common practice to purchase remanufactured transmissions rather than new ones because they are affordable and reliable.

Potential Disadvantages of Remanufactured Transmissions
Although some companies that remanufacture transmissions use only new major components, many companies leave many used gears and parts in place. Also, in order to save money on production costs, some companies may take shortcuts and use existing seals and gaskets rather than installing new ones. This may result in transmission leaks or transmissions that do not last very long.

Another potential concern is the fact that some companies do not offer adequate warranties. While some manufacturers do offer lengthy warranties, many companies that remanufacture transmissions offer warranties of less than one year. While the cost of these transmissions is lower than a new one, it is still a considerable investment and you should expect and require an appropriate warranty.

Other Remanufactured Transmission Considerations
While purchasing a new transmission will result in paying a higher price, a new transmission will almost always perform correctly right out of the box. With a remanufactured one, you never know what you're getting until you actually have the transmission installed. If you are considering a remanufactured transmission, always make sure that you do thorough research on the company that remanufactured the transmission as well as consider the warranty offered with it.
