An automobile can be a complicated piece of machinery for a DIY transmission repair, but that does not mean there is nothing you can do to help maintain the service of your transmission. If your vehicle's automatic transmission is slipping or making a noise when shifting it might be due to a low transmission fluid level or a clogged filter.

Just as a car needs periodic oil and filter changes, and automatic transmission needs its filter and fluid changed. Due to the heat of the transmission, the fluid can evaporate and with normal wear, the filter can become clogged with metal shavings and sludge. In the owner manuals there will be a chart showing how often this fluid and filter needs to be changed. If you have a high usage of the vehicle, performing this service more frequently is advised. Any other service needed to the transmission is best left to a qualified mechanic.

Most auto parts stores have filter kits that contain the transmission filter and a new replacement gasket. When purchasing the transmission filter kit, make sure you purchase the correct quantity of transmission fluid. There is nothing worse to have the car on lifts and inoperative and realize you do not have everything you need for the repair and now have no transportation to return to the store.

Even though removing the transmission pan and changing the filter is a messy job, it is not too difficult to do. Most auto parts stores sell replacement kits. Make sure you have all the parts and replacement fluid before starting this project. Nothing is worse than having the vehicle up on blocks and realizing you are missing something and now have no transportation to the store.
