How to Install a Rearview Camera in Your Car

July 7, 2010

A rearview camera is a very useful thing to have in your car. Most commonly, people will install a rearview backup camera so that they can best see what they're doing and where they're going when they put the car in reverse. Another type of rearview mirror camera can help to see what is behind you at all times.

Step 1 - Purchase the Camera System

Go to your local auto body repair shop and ask for advice on which camera will work for your vehicle and for your needs. There are several different types, and it pays to do some research before you settle on one particular type of camera to use.

Step 2 - Read the Kit Instructions

Although the process for installing these cameras is generally straightforward, it's always a good idea to follow the instructions from the kit.

Step 3 - Wire the Camera

Disconnect the battery and wire the camera according to the instructions to the battery. This will provide power to the camera.

Step 4 - Install the Monitor

If the camera has a monitor to view the scene behind your car, install that in or on the dashboard.

Step 5 - Install the Camera

Install the camera in place, either on the rear bumper of your vehicle or elsewhere, according to the instructions.

Step 6 - Test the Camera

Before you drive with the camera, reconnect the car battery and test the camera out. Make sure that the signal is feeding properly to the monitor inside of the car.
